Baby is on the way: Prepare dog for it

The pregnancy is an exciting time, the anticipation of the baby is great. So that your dog does not feel unsettled by this change in his and his life, you should prepare him early for the new earthlings.

At the latest, when your baby is in the crawling age and goes on an exploratory tour through the apartment, it will meet your dog. The little worm then does not yet know what that fluffy creature is, and may by mistake annoy or scare the four-legged friend. Your dog may react in a way that can be dangerous to the baby. However, if you prepare your four-legged well, such dangerous situations can be avoided.

Schedule "forbidden" zones for the dog

Once the baby is here, your dog will not be able to go anywhere. The nursery as well as the parents' bedroom should be declared "forbidden" zones so that there are no collisions between baby and animal. Get started as soon as possible so that it becomes normal for your dog to be in the house only in certain areas. On the other hand, if you forbid him to do so only when the baby has already moved into his or her nursery, he does not understand it. He links this uncertainty with the new earthly citizen and that makes a later human-dog friendship difficult.

Keep going to the nursery or your bedroom and practice everyday activities like changing diapers. Concentrate on these activities so that your animal companion gets used to the fact that you are regularly employed in the "forbidden" zones and can not take care of him at the moment. He then waits patiently until you are done.

Dog to prepare for smells and sounds

The strange odors and sounds of the baby can greatly confuse dogs because they have a much finer sense of smell and a more sensitive hearing than humans. Using a CD with baby noises, you can prepare your four-legged friend for the unfamiliar sounds. Set up the changing room and baby clothes as early as possible so that your pet is familiar with the smells of baby powder, wet wipes, and skin creams when the baby comes.

The baby is here! Only the rest

When mom comes home with the baby from the hospital, try to stay relaxed. Act normally and calmly so your dog realizes that everything is alright. The father or grandparents can come in with the new family member so that the newly minted mother can welcome her animal friend.

Do not hold the baby right in front of your four-legged friend, but treat the newborn as a matter of course. Your dog will quickly accept it as part of his family.
